EBay "extends the boundary of the store" with shoppable windows
EBay plans to launch its first four "shoppable windows" this summer in busy New York City neighborhoods, selling 30 items from fashion brand Kate Spade Saturday. Consumers will be able to order from a touch screen on the front window of a closed shop and have the order delivered within an hour. "This extends the boundary of the store," said Steve Yankovich, eBay's head of innovation and new ventures. "Suddenly, the physical store, by virtue of online technology, extends to any space that's interesting to use." Reuters (6/5)

7-Eleven could expand to 30,000 stores in North America
Tokyo-based Seven & I Holdings is on track to more than double the number of 7-Eleven stores in North America, and the chain could grow to as many as 30,000 stores in the region from 8,000, Chairman Toshifumi Suzuki said last week. The company has been buying small chain stores in the U.S. as part of its growth plan, and will likely make more acquisitions in the future. "We will raise the quality of operations, and we will go into the areas where we don’t have outlets," Suzuki said. Bloomberg (6/3)

Intelligent street signage points to what's next
New York interactive agency Breakfast has created Points, a digital street signage system that can anticipate the needs of passersbys based on the time of day and what's going on in the area; pointing in the direction of a stadium while posting the real-time score of the game, for example. The sign, which uses 16,000 LED lights, also comes with a menu that lets pedestrians search for additional information. Digital Trends (6/4), Adweek/AdFreak blog (6/5)

Exec: Digital screens are helping auto dealerships stand out
Digital signage is proving much more effective than static signs when it comes to helping car dealerships boost sales and marketing efforts, according to Robert Orndorff, executive vice president of Automotive Broadcasting Network. "Now a poster on a wall done really well is pretty good, but when you start talking about a video wall, showing running footage? That's on the wall behind that car that you're looking at? Then you've created a very impressive environment, and dealers absolutely get that," Orndorff said. Digital Signage Today (5/31)

If you are producing channel letters, then you know that the process of laying out individual LED modules can be tedious. Or if you are sending drawings to your LED suppliers, the response time might not be fast enough. But now you can quickly generate accurate LED layouts in-house with software built specifically for this task: LED Wizard 7. Download the whitepaper.
