Nurse demand high in Va., with emphasis on higher degrees
Most Piedmont Virginia Community College nursing graduates got jobs last year, many at the University of Virginia Medical Center or Martha Jefferson Hospital. Health and Life Sciences Dean Kathy Hudson expects that trend to continue, and says area hospitals are looking for nurses with advanced training and at least a bachelor's degree. Many graduates sign job contracts that have them going back to school within five years to obtain a bachelor's degree, and the University of Virginia has a program that pays for its nurses to get a BSN. Why more work is needed to promote nurse safety
Medline Chief Nursing Officer Martie Moore says more needs to be done to protect nurses from blood-borne pathogens, physical injury, dermatitis related to hand hygiene and the influenza and cold viruses. The rate of illness and injury at hospitals is almost double the rate for all private employers. "Workers who take care of us when we are sick or hurt should not be at such high risk for injuries," Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health David Michaels said. Texas hospital adopts new recruiting strategy to fill open jobs
Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, Texas, is changing its recruitment strategy, hoping a focus on quality of care, the hospital's honors, signing bonuses and relocation help will fill about 60 full-time and part-time positions. The need for more nurses has contributed to the hospital having an increasing number of diversions to other centers' emergency departments. Longview News-Journal (Texas) (7/19)
