Minn. facilities seek to fill nursing jobs
Mayo Clinic, the Franciscan sisters of Rochester and Home Instead Senior Care are among Minnesota employers hiring nurses. Gwen Buckingham of the Assisi Heights nursing home said staff shortages extend throughout the Midwest and nation. A large number of retirements has Mayo searching for nurses in multiple areas, said Department of Nursing Chairwoman Pam Johnson, who asked departments to reduce meetings and free nurses for patient care. New roles for nurses will drive 2015 trends, experts say
Nursing experts say professional trends for this year are likely to include more nurses in leadership positions affecting policy, heading up care coordination and multidisciplinary teams, and working in ambulatory health jobs. ANA is focusing on ethics in 2015. Hospital's pediatric ICU temporarily closes due to nurse shortage
Ventura County Medical Center in California has temporarily closed its pediatric intensive care unit, the only one in the county, because it can't find enough nurses to staff it. Officials say advanced training requirements make hiring or transferring nurses from other units more difficult, but they are contacting staffing agencies and hoping to share personnel with other pediatric ICUs so the unit can reopen. Today, a nurse is expected to take into account not only a patient's direct needs but also how to provide the best care within the patient's ethnic or cultural norms. Join Robert Pope, Ph.D., MSN, RN, on March 18 at 1 p.m. Eastern Time to discuss how to deliver culturally competent care in a diverse workforce.
