Nursing job market varies across U.S.
Jobs for registered nurses are plentiful in some parts of the U.S., including Indiana, where the state's Department of Workforce Development ranked RN as No. 1 on a list of 50 hot careers. Elsewhere, Sean Clarke, associate dean for undergraduate programs at Boston College's Connell School of Nursing, says new grads in the Boston area may have to look for jobs in the suburbs or in other regions. Boston College associate professor Judith Shindul-Rothschild says nurses with bachelor's degrees have an easier time finding jobs, and those in southern and central states may have the best luck. NP practice legislation is at different stages in Plains states
North Dakota's 2011 law allowing nurse practitioners to practice without physician supervision has led to NP-run clinics opening in the state, reducing a shortage of primary care clinicians, says NP Gwen Witzel. Minnesota has passed a similar law, and Nebraska lawmakers have given first-round approval to a bill that passed last session but was vetoed by the governor. Grand Forks Herald (N.D.) Wash. state loan-forgiveness bill seen as recruitment tool
Washington state lawmakers introduced a student loan debt-forgiveness bill that they hope will help recruit more practitioners and alleviate a shortage of primary care clinicians. The bill, which has support from the Washington State Nurses Association, would add $8 million to the state's Health Professional Loan Repayment and Scholarship Fund in an effort to make 118 additional loan-repayment awards. Why recruiters should consider existing nurse staff first
Human resources personnel in health care settings who work with recruiters or do recruiting themselves should first look at developing the potential of existing staff, writes Eric Magnussen of Cancer Treatment Centers of America. Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It's a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity."
