Neb. seeks to meet demand for nurses
Nebraska needs more nurses, and an improving economy plus increasing numbers of retiring nurses will add to the demand, says Pam Uhler, patient service care operation director at CHI Health Good Samaritan. The University of Nebraska Medical Center and six community colleges in the state have established the Nebraska RN-BSN Collaborative to make it easier to move from a two-year program to a bachelor's degree program. "Certification provides a foundation for lifelong learning and professional development. The purpose of certification is to assure the public that this individual has mastered the body of knowledge and acquired skills in the specialty," said Marianne Horahan, director of certification services at the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Study: Changes needed to address pediatric NP shortages
The U.S. will need more and larger pediatric nurse practitioner programs to meet future demand for PNPs, University of Michigan researchers reported in Pediatrics. The study found that the PNP specialty needs to be better promoted and that programs must do a better job of preparing students to pass certification exams. Researchers projected a 13-year shortage of PNPs unless changes are made, but they said increasing the ranks by 4% annually could reduce the duration of the shortage to five years. Mo. colleges step up nursing programs to address shortages
Missouri colleges are adding to their nursing programs and offering accelerated degree options to attract students and help reduce future nurse shortages. High percentages of students graduate from nursing schools with a job secured, and many stay in Missouri. While state funding is an issue for nursing schools seeking to expand, Central Methodist University last fall began construction on a $6.5 million Center for Allied Health to enhance its nursing program.
